Vineyard update from viticulturalist, Chris Gillmore:

It’s back to a real winter this season. Consistent wet and stormy weather has filled up ground water and dams. Our seasonal workers from Tonga returned for their fourth year of pruning and managed to finish a fortnight earlier than usual. The cold, wet weather delayed budburst, though it’s gaining momentum now – excellent news for the next vintage of your favourite Clairault and Streicker wines!

Clairault SBS wins a trophy!

The 2017 Clairault Margaret River Sauvignon Blanc Semillon has taken home the top prize for Best White Blend at the 2018 KPMG Sydney Royal Wine Show, ahead of a strong field of wines from across the country.

The Sydney Royal Wine Show, established in 1822, attracted an unprecedented 2,200 entries for this year’s competition and awarded 34 trophies across 66 classes. In the three classes eligible for the Best White Blend trophy, only three gold medals were awarded.

The Liquorland Perpetual Trophy for Best White Blend was first awarded in 1986.

Blends of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon have long been pillars of Margaret River winemaking and show judges noted that, ‘the best wine shows freshness and balance’. General Manager of Clairault | Streicker Wines, Angela Gosden, said the wine, “is a great expression of Margaret River Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon blends. Wine enthusiasts really enjoy the clean, fruit-driven palate and find that this wine goes so well with the enviable lifestyle of the region”.

This is the first time the Clairault Sauvignon Blanc Semillon has won a trophy since John Streicker purchased the vineyard in 2012. He’s pleased with the result and noted, “the award is a tribute to the history of the Margaret River region and the dedication of our team”.

The 2017 Clairault Margaret River Sauvignon Blanc Semillon can be tasted at Clairault | Streicker Estate, on Caves Road in Margaret River. The Cellar Door is open seven days a week from 10am to 5pm. The wines are available for purchase through the website and at selected wine stores. For more information please call +61 8 9755 6225.

James Halliday's 2019 Wine Companion Results

The soils of Clairault | Streicker Wines

Each year, James Halliday and his team taste through thousands of Australian wines to produce the Wine Companion, essential reading for anyone interested in wine and a much-awaited scorecard for wineries.

Clairault | Streicker Wines have received a 5-red star rating for another year! This rating indicates an outstanding winery regularly producing wines of exemplary quality and typicity.

Top-rated wines for the 2019 edition include:

2015 Streicker Nysa
95/100

66.67% cabernet franc, 33.33% cabernet sauvignon, hand-picked, destemmed and gently crushed, cool-fermented for 14 days, matured in French barriques (50% new) for 18 months. As expected, the cabernet franc gives the wine a distinctive aroma, almost, but not quite, pungent, its lighter structure also contributing much to the open face of the wine. The finish is at once both spicy and juicy, driven by flavours, not tannins. The way the wine has soaked up the new French oak is exceptional.
This is a new flagship wine for the Streicker range. Due for release October 2018. Join our mailing list for updates.

2016 Streicker Bridgeland Block Sauvignon Blanc Semillon
95/100, Special Value star

64.54% sauvignon blanc, 35.46% semillon, hand-picked, cold-crushed, fermented in French barriques (33% new), matured for 9 months. Meticulous vinification achieves the desired explosive flavours of lemon skin, zest and juice in a single, mouthwatering stream of flavours. Natural acidity, preserved by preventing mlf, is a constant companion through to the extremely long finish and aftertaste.
Due for release January 2019. Current release can be found here.

2016 Clairault Estate Chardonnay
96/100, Special Value star

Hand-picked, chilled, whole-bunch pressed, fermented in French barriques (40% new), matured on lees for 9 months. A wine of rare purity, intensity and length. Grapefruit is the dominant flavour, white peach and Granny Smith apple adding to the complexity. French oak plays its all-important role in providing structure and texture, its flavour unimportant. Drink to 2028
Due for release October 2018. Current release can be found here.

Autumn Release Wines

Are you planning a trip to Clairault | Streicker Estate soon? There are plenty of new release wines available in-store and online.

Clairault Cellar Release Pinot Noir 2017

This is the first harvest of Pinot Noir from our Bridgeland vineyard. The wine is light red with blue hints. The delicate aromas are of raspberries, tea leaves, white pepper and smoked spices with hints of flint and tilled earth. Crystalline red fruit, subtle peppery notes and gun smoke texture support a tight and bristling palate of lithe fruit tannin under a dark and engulfing humic finish.

Clairault Margaret River Chardonnay 2017

This Chardonnay is tinted pale green with yellow hints. The aromas are fresh and vibrant, consisting of peaches, cream, nutmeg and crushed lime. The palate has a balanced entry of dense stone fruit and lively citrus flavours. Coating acidity and fine texture lead to a finish of nectarines, toasted nuts and lemon curd.

Clairault Estate Chardonnay 2015

A pale green Chardonnay with hints of straw and aromas of nectarine, lemon curd and wet slate. The palate has a refined entry supported by zesty acidity and fine grain French oak texture. Flavours of creamy French oak and lime juice are held in check by a generous texture and pure mineral finish.

Harvest, 2018

While most of us have been enjoying the end of summer and its little bursts of warm weather, our vineyard team have been working at all hours to bring in this year's harvest. Senior Vineyard Manager, Chris Gillmore has this to say about the season;

“Vintage 2018 has played out nicely with continued mild warm weather, minimal rainfall events, and a slow and steady pace of picking – meaning no rushing around and making compromises.

Both white varietals and now reds, have progressed with little disruption to reaching an optimum maturity. Cabernet Sauvignon looks to be the only variety likely to hang further, to develop improved tannin structure and intensity of flavour. An average year yield-wise, but definitely shaping up to be a great vintage all round."

There's a week or two of picking left, then with all the fruit in the winery it's up to our winemaking team to aid the transition in to bottle - we look forward to the results!

Estate Chardonnay is an Excellent Example

Christina Pickard, reviewer with Wine Enthusiast had this to say about the 2014 Clairault Estate Chardonnay.

Pale gold, almost green tinged, this is is an excellent example of why Margaret River excels at Chardonnay. It's complex, with notes of lemon zest, orange peel, butter and exotic spices that last all the way through to the finish. It's rich with a chalky texture and is age worthy, with enough acidity to take it long into the future. Drink now–2027.
